Nootropics Depot Tongkat Ali Review
Our verdict: Nootropics Depot tongkat ali is one of the most transparent options on the market: each product states its eurycomanone percentage, and the company posts batch certificates of analysis (COAs) that include heavy-metal results. For most people, the 200 mg, 2% eurycomanone capsules are the best pick because they match the 200 mg daily dose used in the best-known trials at about $0.30 a day. The 10% extract is stronger by eurycomanone content, but no published human trial we found has tested a 10% extract, so “stronger” does not mean “better proven.”
This review covers ND’s full tongkat ali lineup, how it compares with the clinical research, what one published COA shows, what Reddit discussions can and cannot tell you, and who should avoid tongkat ali. We have not personally tested these products; this review is based on ND’s product pages, its lab reports and the published studies.

Key Takeaways
- ND sells tongkat ali root extract at 2% eurycomanone (200 mg capsules, tablets or powder) and 10% eurycomanone (100 mg capsules or tablets), plus Eurycomax, a multi-ingredient blend.[11]
- Most trials used 200 to 400 mg a day of standardized water extracts, such as Physta, for 4 to 12 weeks.[1][4][5]
- A meta-analysis of five randomized trials found higher total testosterone with tongkat ali, with the effect confirmed in men with low testosterone.[2]
- A COA for one 10% lot showed 11.4 mg eurycomanone per tablet and lead at 0.89 ppm, under ND’s 2.0 ppm limit.[12]
- Tongkat ali can reduce the absorption of propranolol and is not suitable for people with hormone-sensitive conditions.[9]

The Nootropics Depot Tongkat Ali Lineup
Nootropics Depot (ND) is an Arizona supplement company known for standardized single ingredients and published lab reports (see our Nootropics Depot review). At the time of writing, it sold four tongkat ali products.[11]
| Product | Per Serving | Eurycomanone Per Serving | Sizes And Price (At Time Of Writing) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tongkat Ali Extract, 2% Eurycomanone (capsules or tablets) | 200 mg root extract, 1 capsule | About 4 mg (2% by UPLC) | 60 ct $19.99; 120 ct $34.99 |
| Tongkat Ali Extract, 10% Eurycomanone (capsules or tablets) | 100 mg root extract, 1 capsule or tablet | About 10 mg | 60 ct $39.99; 120 ct $69.99 |
| Tongkat Ali Powder, 2% Eurycomanone | 200 mg (you measure it) | About 4 mg | 15 or 30 grams, from $22.99 |
| Eurycomax (blend) | 2 capsules; 850 mg tongkat complex plus other ingredients | 7 mg | 60 or 120 capsules, from $64.99 |
ND suggests taking one 2% capsule a day with food, or one 10% capsule or tablet a day with or without food.[11] Its support page describes the 2% extract as more “rounded” and suited to everyday use, and the 10% as more targeted, noting that raising one compound’s percentage usually lowers the concentration of other compounds in the extract.[13]
A Note On Eurycomax
Eurycomax is not a plain tongkat product. Alongside 850 mg of a dual-extracted tongkat ali complex (800 mg cold-water ultrasonic extract plus 50 mg water/ethanol extract), each serving contains 200 mg of Mucuna pruriens standardized to 15% L-DOPA (a dopamine precursor), 200 mg of horny goat weed extract, 2.5 mg of the hormone precursor pregnenolone, boron and iodine, among other ingredients.[11] L-DOPA and pregnenolone raise the bar for caution, especially for anyone taking medications or with a hormone-sensitive condition. We do not include Eurycomax in our recommendations; talk with a doctor before trying it.
How ND’s Doses Compare With The Clinical Trials
Tongkat ali research mostly used hot-water root extracts, dosed by total extract weight rather than by eurycomanone. The main findings:
| Study | Who | Dose And Duration | Main Finding |
|---|---|---|---|
| Talbott 2013[1] | 63 moderately stressed adults | Standardized hot-water extract, 4 weeks | Cortisol down 16%, testosterone up 37%, lower tension, anger and confusion |
| Tambi 2012[3] | 76 men with late-onset hypogonadism | 200 mg/day, 1 month | Normal testosterone in 90.8% after treatment vs 35.5% before (no placebo group) |
| Ismail 2012[4] | 109 men aged 30 to 55 | 300 mg/day Physta, 12 weeks | Better physical functioning and erectile function scores vs placebo |
| Chinnappan 2021[5] | 105 men 50 to 70 with low testosterone | 100 or 200 mg/day Physta, 12 weeks | Higher total testosterone vs placebo at both doses |
| Henkel 2014[7] | 25 active adults aged 57 to 72 | 400 mg/day, 5 weeks | Pilot study measuring hormones, blood markers and strength |
| Chan 2021[6] | 32 young men | 600 mg/day, 2 weeks | Higher testosterone and free testosterone vs placebo |
Pooling five randomized trials, a 2022 meta-analysis found a significant increase in total testosterone, confirmed in the subgroup of men with hypogonadism.[2] A 2024 systematic review rated tongkat ali “possibly effective” for men with late-onset hypogonadism and for healthy men, which is a cautious endorsement.[10] Several of the trials were funded by or involved extract makers. For the full evidence, including stress and mood, see our tongkat ali ingredient guide.
2% Vs 10%: Which Matches The Research?
ND’s 2% capsule delivers 200 mg of extract, the same amount used in the Tambi trial and the higher Physta arm in the Chinnappan trial.[3][5] By extract weight, it is the closest match to the research.
The 10% extract is harder to map onto the studies. It delivers about 10 mg of eurycomanone in 100 mg of extract, but the trials did not dose by eurycomanone, and research extracts varied widely: the water extract used in a propranolol interaction study contained just 0.0272% eurycomanone.[9] Water extracts also contain proteins, polysaccharides and other compounds that a highly concentrated extract may have less of, as ND itself notes.[13] ND’s product pages do not state the extraction solvent for either standardized extract. Until a trial tests a 10% extract, it is a reasonable option for experienced users, not the evidence-matched one.
Cost Per Studied Dose
| Product | Daily Serving | Cost Per Day (120 ct) |
|---|---|---|
| 2% capsules | 1 x 200 mg | About $0.29 ($0.33 with 60 ct) |
| 10% capsules or tablets | 1 x 100 mg | About $0.58 ($0.67 with 60 ct) |
ND’s own marketing calls its extracts unusually cost-effective per milligram of eurycomanone, based on its in-house comparisons.[11] That is true by eurycomanone content, but cost per milligram of a marker compound only matters if that compound drives the effect, which has not been shown in people.
Best Match For The Research: ND Tongkat Ali 2%
One 200 mg capsule of 2% eurycomanone extract matches the 200 mg daily dose used in several trials, for about $0.30 a day. The 10% version is the more concentrated alternative.

Heavy-Metal Testing: Why It Matters For Tongkat Ali
Contamination has been documented in this category. When researchers tested 100 herbal products in Malaysia, eight contained 10.64 to 20.72 ppm of lead, failing the country’s quality requirements, and all eight products named in the study were tongkat ali (Eurycoma) preparations.[8] That study is more than 20 years old, but it is why batch testing matters when you buy tongkat ali.
ND’s tongkat pages say every batch is tested for purity, potency and consistency, with third-party results available, and that products are made in cGMP-certified US facilities and tested in ISO-accredited labs.[11] We read the COA ND posted for one 120-count lot of the 10% tablets (lot TAECS1040826, April 2026).[12]
| Test | ND Specification | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Eurycomanone (UPLC) | ≥10 mg per tablet | 11.4 mg per tablet |
| Identity (HPTLC) | Eurycoma longifolia root | Matched reference |
| Lead | ≤2.0 ppm | 0.8914 ppm |
| Arsenic | ≤0.8 ppm | 0.0620 ppm |
| Cadmium | ≤0.5 ppm | 0.0288 ppm |
| Mercury | ≤0.5 ppm | <0.01 ppm |
Every result passed. Lead was the closest to its limit, at about 44% of ND’s specification. Because each tablet weighs about 200 mg, that works out to roughly 0.18 micrograms of lead per tablet. The COA does not name the outside lab, and results differ by lot, so check the report for the batch you receive.
Nootropics Depot Tongkat Ali On Reddit
People searching “nootropics depot tongkat ali reddit” will find user threads plus ND’s own official subreddit, r/NootropicsDepot, which the company links from its product pages and describes as a place to ask questions and share experiences.[11] ND also publishes a page that collects Reddit comments about Eurycomax.
Forum discussions can be useful for practical questions, such as how people time their doses or how they compare the 2% and 10% versions. Keep in mind that a brand-run subreddit is moderated by the company, that individual reports are not controlled for placebo effects, and that testosterone changes can only be confirmed with blood tests. We do not summarize individual anecdotes here because we cannot verify them; the trials above are a better guide to what to expect.
Who It Suits And Who Should Avoid It
A reasonable fit for: adults under moderate stress, based on the cortisol and mood trial, and middle-aged or older men interested in the modest testosterone data, ideally after a blood test with their doctor.[1][2]
Avoid it or ask a doctor first if you:
- Have prostate cancer or another hormone-sensitive condition, or use testosterone or other hormone therapy.
- Are pregnant, breastfeeding or under 18; ND’s own guidance says these groups should not use supplements without medical advice.[13]
- Take propranolol: tongkat ali lowered propranolol absorption by 29% and peak levels by 42% in healthy volunteers.[9]
- Take other prescription medications, since most interactions have not been studied.
- Want a cognitive supplement: see our best nootropics guide instead.
Side Effects And Interactions
In the randomized trials, tongkat ali was generally well tolerated. In the 12-week Physta trial in 109 men, safety measures were comparable to placebo, and in the 105-man trial of aging men, no clinically relevant safety changes were seen at 100 or 200 mg a day.[4][5] Long-term safety beyond a few months has not been established. The propranolol interaction above is the best-documented drug interaction.[9] If you are also considering shilajit, see our Nootropics Depot shilajit review; the two have never been tested together.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Nootropics Depot Tongkat Ali Good?
It is among the most transparent options available: each product lists its eurycomanone content, and ND posts batch COAs with heavy-metal results.[11][12] The ingredient’s evidence is modest, so product quality cannot make it work better than the trials suggest.
Should I Take The 2% Or 10% Tongkat Ali?
The 2% capsule (200 mg) matches the extract dose used in several trials.[3][5] The 10% extract has more eurycomanone but has not been tested in published human trials we found. Most people should start with the 2%.
What Is The Best Tongkat Ali Brand?
Look for a root extract with a stated eurycomanone percentage, a dose per capsule near 200 to 400 mg of extract, and a published heavy-metal COA. Branded Physta has the most trials behind it.[4][5] ND’s 2% product meets the transparency criteria, though it is not Physta.
Does Nootropics Depot Tongkat Ali Raise Testosterone?
No study has tested ND’s product specifically. Tongkat ali water extracts raised total testosterone in pooled trials, most clearly in men with low levels.[2] Men with normal levels should expect smaller changes, if any.
How Long Does Tongkat Ali Take To Work?
Trials measured effects after 2 to 12 weeks.[1][5][6] Give it at least four weeks at a consistent dose before judging.
Should I Cycle Tongkat Ali?
Many users take breaks as a precaution, but no study has tested cycling, and long-term safety is unknown. The longest trials in this review lasted 12 weeks.[4][5]
